A Lifeline for Dementia Care in Bridgend and Porthcawl

At Mental Health Matters Wales (MHM Wales), the dementia hubs and groups in Bridgend and Porthcawl are proving to be a vital lifeline for individuals living with dementia and their carers. December saw 267 attendances at our hubs, with 96 unique individuals supported. These numbers represent more than just figures; they reflect stories of transformation, connection, and hope in the face of what is often an overwhelming diagnosis.

A Beacon of Support

For many, the journey with dementia begins with a sense of isolation and confusion. Shirley Humphreys, whose husband was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and vascular dementia 18 months ago, shared how discovering the dementia hub in Porthcawl changed their lives:

"We felt like we had been dropped into the middle of the ocean... Then I saw a sign saying 'pop in dementia hub.' That was truly the beginning of our journey. This group has gone from strength to strength and is continually growing. The staff are second to none—they have brought joy into our lives where there would have been none."

The hubs provide more than just activities; they offer community, understanding, and a safe space where carers and cared-for individuals alike can feel supported.

Making a Difference

Our dementia hubs serve as spaces of empowerment for both those living with dementia and their caregivers. Through activities that stimulate the brain and foster social connections, individuals living with dementia find joy and purpose. Carers, meanwhile, gain access to much-needed support through programmes like the Tania carers programme, which enables them to build resilience and share experiences.

As another attendee remarked:

"Before coming to the Porthcawl group, I felt completely lost and full of dread for the future... The team at MHM can’t stop the dementia, but they are a wonderful support and make life more bearable. They’ve become my rock—I don’t know how I’d get through this journey without them."

Partnership with the NHS

MHM Wales also works closely with the NHS to ensure a comprehensive support network. Dementia support workers like Eilish Horn frequently signpost patients to the hubs, recognising their impact:

"For individuals at the hubs, socialisation and sharing lived experiences have made them better able to cope with the challenges of dementia. As a caregiver myself, this service has given invaluable support, friendship, and strength."

Urgent Call to Action: Save Our Dementia Hubs

Despite their immense value, our dementia hubs are at risk of closure due to funding constraints. Without urgent financial support, the hubs may have to close by the end of March 2025, leaving many without a crucial lifeline.

You can help secure the future of these vital services by contributing to our JustGiving page:

Every donation brings us closer to continuing this life-changing work and ensuring no one faces the challenges of dementia alone.

A Special Thank You

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Alyson Ruddy and the Island Farm Be Neighbourly Group, who, despite severe weather warnings, managed to hold a coffee morning and raise a fantastic £300 to help save our dementia hub. Your dedication and generosity mean the world to us and the many individuals who rely on this service.
