Bridgend Dementia Hubs – Creating Supportive Spaces for Memory Care (Mental Health Awareness Week: 12th – 18th May 2025)

Introduction

Mental Health Awareness Week (12th – 18th May 2025) is an opportunity to reflect on how we support one another. This year's theme is “Community,” highlighting the importance of connection, support, and shared understanding. For individuals living with dementia and their carers, community support is not just valuable – it is essential.

At MHM Wales, our Dementia Hubs are more than just places of support. They are communities of care where individuals living with dementia and their families can find understanding, comfort, and connection. Our Dementia Hubs provide a safe space where individuals can participate in activities, access advice, and connect with others who understand their journey.

The Power of Community in Dementia Care

Dementia can be an isolating journey for both individuals and their carers. Feelings of confusion, anxiety, and loneliness can be overwhelming. Our Dementia Hubs combat this isolation by offering a space where people can connect, share experiences, and receive compassionate support.

How Our Dementia Hubs Build Community:

  • Social Connections: Individuals living with dementia can connect with others who share their experiences, reducing loneliness.

  • Peer Support for Carers: Carers can share their challenges, access advice, and receive emotional support from those who understand.

  • Memory-Enhancing Activities: Creative sessions help individuals reconnect with their memories and maintain cognitive skills.

  • Inclusive, Safe Spaces: Everyone is welcome, and our hubs are designed to be accessible and supportive.

Real Stories of Comfort and Connection

Our Dementia Hubs have transformed lives across Bridgend County Borough. Here are some stories from individuals who found comfort and support through our hubs:

“Before joining the Dementia Hub, my mum felt isolated and confused. Now, she looks forward to the Hubs, and I can see her smiling again.”
“The music sessions are magical. My dad, who barely speaks, starts singing along to his favourite old songs. It’s like we get him back for a little while.”
“As a carer, I felt overwhelmed and exhausted. The Carer Support Group gave me a space to share, and I learned so much from others who were going through the same thing.”
