Building Communities That Care – Why It Matters (Mental Health Awareness Week 12th May - 18th May 2025)

Introduction

Mental Health Awareness Week (12th May to the 18th May 2025 ) is a time to reflect on how our communities support those living with mental illness. Despite progress, many people still face stigma, discrimination, and a lack of support. At MHM Wales, we believe in creating communities that care, where everyone feels understood and supported.

The Challenges Faced by Those Living with Mental Illness

People with mental health conditions continue to face challenges such as stigma, discrimination, and limited access to support. This can lead to isolation, anxiety, and a lack of opportunities. Our mission at MHM Wales is to change that by offering a wide range of support services to help individuals thrive.

Our Services (Alphabetical Order)

Advocacy Services

Our advocacy services empower individuals by ensuring their voices are heard and their rights are respected. Our advocates support individuals in navigating healthcare, making decisions, and understanding their rights.

Dementia Support

We operate dedicated dementia hubs across Bridgend County Borough, providing a supportive environment for individuals with dementia and their carers. These hubs offer therapeutic activities, information sessions, and one-on-one support.

SHARE – Self Harm Recovery Awareness Education

Our SHARE project provides peer support for individuals struggling with self-harm. It offers a safe space for open conversations, emotional support, and practical guidance, promoting recovery and resilience.

Talking Connections

Our Talking Connections service offers professional counselling support through face-to-face sessions in Bridgend and online counselling available across Wales. This service provides a safe, confidential space for individuals to explore their thoughts and feelings.

Therapeutic Support Services

We provide therapeutic support in hospitals across Cardiff, the Vale Health Board, and Bridgend. These services include creative and therapeutic activities that support mental wellbeing.

Wellbeing Hubs

Our Wellbeing Hubs offer a safe space for individuals to connect, access support, and take part in wellbeing activities across Bridgend County Borough. These hubs provide peer support groups, creative sessions, and information on managing mental health.

Wellbeing Retreat

Our Wellbeing Retreat is available to all residents across Bridgend and some areas in RCT, offering a tranquil space for self-care. It is open Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday, and Wednesday from 5 pm to 10 pm. This service is referral-based.

Join us this Mental Health Awareness Week in turning awareness into action. Get involved in your community, volunteer, or reach out to someone who might need support. Together, we can create communities that care.
