Carers Week is a time to recognise and celebrate the tireless support offered by unpaid carers across the UK. It’s also a chance to spotlight the places, people and projects that make a difference to both carers and the individuals they support. At Mental Health Matters Wales, one such place is our Dementia Hub in Bridgend—a space that brings together community, creativity and care.

This year, we were proud to host Aysha, an MA Art Psychotherapy student from the University of South Wales, as part of her training placement. With a background in teaching, Aysha brought warmth and dedication to our Art for Wellbeing support group, working with individuals living with early-onset dementia and their carers.
“I gained experience working with groups of individuals, their carers, and families, and also helping individuals one-on-one with art wellbeing tasks. I gained an insight into the challenges of what it's like to be diagnosed and to live with early-onset dementia.”
Through her placement, Aysha developed key therapeutic skills—empathy, active listening, trust-building—all while embracing the ethos of MHM Wales: empowering people through person-centred, inclusive support. Her sessions offered participants not just creative expression, but also connection and belonging, which are so often vital for people affected by dementia and their carers.
Aysha’s reflection also highlights something we deeply value at MHM Wales: collaboration. By offering placements, we’re not only supporting the next generation of mental health professionals, we’re enriching our services and giving students real-world insight into the realities of both caring and being cared for.
“I observed firsthand the benefit the charity provides vulnerable people— for some, a purpose and a sense of belonging. I feel privileged to have made a difference.”
This Carers Week, we want to say thank you to carers, supporters, students, and volunteers who make a difference every day. Whether through practical help, emotional support, or just being there—your contribution matters.
