Meet Our Trustee: Elaine Tanner #TrusteeWeek

This #TrusteeWeek, we're pleased to introduce Elaine Tanner, one of our passionate trustees at Mental Health Matters Wales. With a long and varied career in healthcare, Elaine’s experience spans nursing, public health, and project management, bringing a wealth of knowledge and compassion to our team.

A Lifelong Dedication to Healthcare and Wellbeing

Elaine began her nursing career in 1982 at Leeds General Infirmary, working in operating theatres before moving to Cardiff, where she worked in Cardiff Royal Infirmary before moving to the Cardiac unit in the University Hospital of Wales.

While working as a Cardiac rehabilitation nurse she also became part of the major incident team, providing counselling for individuals experiencing post-traumatic stress and supporting cardiac rehabilitation, embodying her commitment to patient-centred care.

In 1996, Elaine joined the British Heart Foundation, where she spent nearly two decades supporting cardiac rehabilitation and heart health programmes across the UK. Her work contributed to heart health initiatives that continue to benefit communities to this day.

Building Partnerships and Leading COVID-19 Testing Efforts

Elaine returned to the NHS in 2016, taking on a variety of roles, including supporting primary care and working with the Western Bay Regional Partnership to bridge the gap between health and social care for older adults. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Elaine was a Senior Programme Manager at CTMUHB and was approached to lead testing efforts across the region. She led the testing programme until her retirement in April 2022, supporting essential pandemic response efforts.

Life Beyond Work

Now retired, Elaine enjoys spending more time with her family, including her husband (also a retired nurse) and her daughter, who recently returned home after completing her MSc. A lifelong fan of country music and an enthusiastic line dancer, Elaine stays active and social by attending live music events and participating in local quizzes.

We’re grateful for Elaine’s expertise and her unwavering commitment to supporting others. Her dedication to healthcare and community aligns perfectly with our mission at Mental Health Matters Wales.
