In celebration of #TrusteeWeek, we’re thrilled to introduce Richard Tanner, one of our dedicated trustees at Mental Health Matters Wales. With over 30 years of experience in the NHS, Richard brings a unique perspective on healthcare, having witnessed first-hand the changing demands on medical staff and resources over the decades.
A Career Dedicated to Care
Richard’s journey in healthcare began as a Registered General Nurse (RGN), primarily working in medical wards. His dedication to patient care saw him through a long career across various healthcare settings, including a brief period in surgical work and even an international stint as a nurse in Germany. Richard’s extensive experience in the NHS has given him invaluable insights into the challenges facing healthcare today, including the growing gap between patient needs and available resources.
Diverse Experience and Lifelong Learning
Outside of his healthcare career, Richard has explored a wide range of fields, working in industries as varied as agriculture and hospitality. This diverse background not only showcases his adaptability but also enriches his contributions to our board, where he draws on these experiences to offer a fresh perspective on mental health support.
A Love for Travel and Language
Richard has a strong sense of adventure and curiosity, which led him to travel extensively across Europe and even to Australia in his younger years. His time in Germany helped him develop a solid command of the German language, with conversational fluency that has become one of his hidden talents.
Family and Values
At the heart of Richard’s life is his family—a close-knit unit he shares with his wife and daughter. His dedication to family and community mirrors his commitment to Mental Health Matters Wales, where he’s passionate about making a positive impact on mental health services and advocating for better support for individuals and families alike.
At Mental Health Matters Wales, we’re grateful for Richard’s wealth of experience, both in healthcare and beyond. His insights and commitment to service make him a valuable asset to our team.
