Meet Our Trustee: Richard Young #Trusteesweek

This Trustee Week, we’re proud to introduce Richard Young, our dedicated Chair of Mental Health Matters Wales. Richard’s lifelong commitment to public service and community well-being has made him an invaluable leader and advocate for mental health in Wales.

A Lifetime of Service

Richard’s journey in public service began in local government, where he spent over 30 years representing his community as a councillor. He first served on Mid Glamorgan County Council and later on Bridgend County Borough Council. Throughout his career, Richard held various prominent roles, including serving as Mayor of Bridgend Town from 1993-94 and later as Mayor of Bridgend County Borough from 2015-16. His leadership reflects his deep commitment to his community and to making a lasting positive impact.

Championing Community and Veterans’ Support

Richard's commitment to community development extended into his role as cabinet member for Communities from 2017 to 2021. His service in the Navy provided him with a unique perspective, which he used to support veterans and service members in Bridgend County. As the Council's Armed Forces Champion, he was a passionate advocate for veterans' rights, mental health services, and support networks, ensuring that those who served the country were given the respect and assistance they deserved.

Leading Mental Health Matters Wales

Richard has served as Chair of Mental Health Matters Wales since 2014, guiding the organisation with his wealth of experience and dedication to mental health. His leadership has been instrumental in expanding our initiatives, strengthening partnerships, and raising awareness about mental health issues across Wales. Richard’s dedication to the cause reflects his unwavering belief in the importance of mental health support for all.

Life Beyond Public Service

Since retiring as a councillor in 2022, Richard continues to dedicate his time to the community. His legacy as a trade union leader, local government representative, and mental health advocate inspires all of us at Mental Health Matters Wales.
