When I first stepped into my A-Level Psychology class at Brynteg Comprehensive School, I had no idea it would be the start of a journey that would profoundly shape my life. Those early lessons introduced me to the complex world of human behaviour and mental health, sparking an interest that would grow into a passion. Learning about psychological theories, research methods, and case studies provided me with a solid foundation, but I soon realised that understanding the human mind goes far beyond textbooks.

This passion led me to Cardiff Metropolitan University, where I pursued a degree in Psychology. Here, the concepts I had learned at A-Level were explored in greater depth, with a strong focus on real-world applications. Engaging with current research and understanding the evidence behind different therapeutic approaches gave me a new perspective on mental health. Yet, despite all the theory, I knew I needed practical experience.
That’s when I discovered Mental Health Matters Wales (MHM Wales), and in November, I began my student placement, volunteering across the well-being and dementia hubs. These spaces quickly became more than just placement sites; they turned into communities where every day was a chance to make a difference.
Working within the dementia hubs has been a profoundly eye-opening experience. It’s here that I learned that true support means meeting people where they are, both physically and emotionally. Dementia is a condition that can strip away memories, but not the person’s essence. This realisation hit me hardest during the simplest of interactions—sharing a quiet moment, listening to familiar songs that spark memories, or simply offering a reassuring presence.
Dementia Action Week has made me reflect even more on the importance of these spaces. For those living with dementia and their carers, the hub is a sanctuary—a place where they are not defined by their condition. Every session is filled with moments of joy, connection, and understanding. Stories are shared, sometimes the same ones repeated, but they are no less significant. For someone with dementia, these stories are a bridge to their identity.
Looking back, I see a clear thread connecting my journey—from those A-Level classes at Brynteg, through my university studies at Cardiff Metropolitan, to this hands-on work at MHM Wales. Each stage has deepened my understanding and strengthened my commitment to pursuing a career in clinical psychology. But beyond the academic knowledge, it’s the people I’ve met and the stories I’ve shared that have truly taught me what it means to care.
As Dementia Action Week shines a spotlight on the importance of understanding and supporting those living with dementia, I’m proud to be part of an organisation that does exactly that. For me, this journey is just beginning, but the lessons I’ve learned at MHM Wales will stay with me forever.
