One such inspiring account comes from Jannine N., a student from the University of South Wales studying MA Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy. Below, we share Jannine's feedback about her 18-month placement as a trainee counsellor with MHM Wales.
A Shared Vision
Jannine joined MHM Wales Talking Connections Counselling Service because she resonated deeply with the organisation's values and principles. She sought to contribute to a local community-based service that offers accessible and affordable (or free) mental health support. Her motivation stemmed not only from a desire to help others but also from a wish to give back to her community.
Experiences that Matter
Reflecting on her time with MHM Wales, Jannine highlighted what she enjoyed most: "Working with MHMW clients—having the privilege of being on the therapeutic journey with them, watching them progress, and experiencing positive outcomes." This direct engagement with clients provided Jannine with the unique opportunity to witness the impact of therapeutic support firsthand. She also valued the collaborative environment with fellow trainee counsellors and the guidance of her supportive placement supervisor, which fostered both personal and professional growth.
Shaping Futures
Jannine noted that her placement significantly shaped her future aspirations. It helped her clarify the client groups she wants to work with and the therapeutic modalities she feels most comfortable using. "The experience has inspired me to move into a different area of charity work...I would now like to move into mental health and well-being," she shared. Moreover, her confidence as a counsellor grew, empowering her to consider starting her own private counselling service while ensuring affordability for those in need.
