From Mentoring to Mental Health: My 20-Year Volunteering Journey

This Volunteers’ Week, I’ve been reflecting on a journey that started 20 years ago—and completely changed my life.
Back then, I was working with the Bridgend Mentoring Service, supporting young people to help keep them out of prison. That experience led me to my local youth club, which became a real source of support during a difficult time in my own life.
After going through depression, I started volunteering with Mental Health Matters Wales—the very same charity that once helped me. That was 16 years ago, and I’ve never looked back.
Since then, I’ve had the privilege of making a real difference, formed lifelong friendships, and had experiences I’ll always treasure. Some of the young people I supported over the years even buy me the occasional pint now—something I never expected, but a lovely reminder of how far we’ve all come.
Volunteering has given me a sense of purpose and belonging, and being able to volunteer while raising my son has been amazing. Knowing that he now wants to give back one day too—it means everything.
If you’re considering volunteering—whether it’s for a career change or just to give back—I can honestly say, it might just change your life too.
