We recently enjoyed a delightful afternoon at our Pencoed Dementia Hub, engaging in a spirited game of dominoes with our community members. The room resonated with laughter and lively conversation, creating an atmosphere where social connections flourished. We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who participated and eagerly anticipate our next gathering on 3rd March.
This event was more than just a game; it highlighted the significant impact that simple social activities can have on mental health and well-being.
Social Engagement and Well-being

Research consistently demonstrates the detrimental effects of loneliness and social isolation, particularly among older adults and individuals living with dementia. Key findings include:
Social participation reduces dementia risk: Engaging in social activities is associated with a 30–50% lower risk of developing dementia.
Social engagement enhances cognitive function: Regular social interactions are linked to improved cognitive outcomes in older adults.
Community involvement improves mental health: Active participation in social groups can alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety, contributing to overall well-being.
The Alzheimer’s Society emphasises that meaningful activities, such as board games and social groups, help maintain cognitive function and provide a vital sense of belonging.
Alignment with the Well-being of Future Generations Act

Our initiatives at MHM Wales align closely with the principles of the Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015, which aims to enhance the social, economic, environmental, and cultural well-being of Wales. Through our Pencoed Dementia Hub, we contribute to several of the Act's well-being goals:
A Healthier Wales: By providing opportunities for social interaction, we aim to maximise individuals' physical and mental well-being.
A More Equal Wales: Our hub offers inclusive activities that promote equality and support for all, regardless of background.
A Wales of Cohesive Communities: By bringing people together through shared experiences, we strengthen community bonds and foster a sense of belonging.
