At Mental Health Matters Wales, we know that movement is more than just exercise—it’s about engagement, connection, and feeling good. This week at Quarella Road, our Dementia Hub members enjoyed a fantastic chair exercise session led by the ever-enthusiastic Michelle, followed by a cuppa and a chat. It was a session full of smiles, laughter, and gentle movement—proving once again that the smallest moments often make the biggest difference.
Why Movement Matters for Dementia
For people living with dementia, physical movement isn’t just about staying active—it helps wake up the brain, improve circulation, and even boost mood. When we move together in a relaxed, supportive environment, it’s about enjoying the moment, not getting it perfect.
Chair exercises offer a safe and accessible way for people to move, stretch, and feel more comfortable in their bodies. The benefits are real:
✅ Improves flexibility and mobility – Gentle stretches help loosen up stiff joints and muscles.
✅ Boosts circulation and energy – Keeping the body moving can help prevent aches and pains.
✅ Enhances mood and confidence – Movement helps release endorphins, lifting spirits.
✅ Encourages connection – When we move together, we feel part of something bigger.
One participant shared:
"I always feel better after these sessions—it wakes me up, and it’s great to do it with friends!"
More Than Just Exercise – The Power of a Cuppa and a Chat
At the heart of these sessions is something just as important as movement: community. After the exercises, our group sat down for a cuppa and a chat, sharing laughter, stories, and moments of connection.
For those living with dementia, social interaction is vital. Loneliness and isolation can be as harmful as physical inactivity, and something as simple as a warm drink and friendly conversation can make all the difference.
Dementia in Wales: The Bigger Picture
Dementia is one of the biggest health challenges in Wales today. (Senedd Research) With the number of older people living with dementia in Wales projected to increase by 70% by 2040, services like our Dementia Hub are more important than ever.
