Dementia brings many changes, but one thing we know for sure is that a positive, supportive environment can make all the difference. At the Bridgend Dementia Hub, we focus on what’s possible, not what’s lost. Today, that meant creating moments of calm and connection through a mindfulness session with Rhys—and what a session it was!
It was busy, yes, but also incredibly peaceful. The room buzzed with quiet energy, and as Rhys guided everyone through gentle breathing, grounding techniques, and sensory exercises, we saw a shift. Hands relaxed, shoulders dropped, and smiles started to appear. It wasn’t about getting it ‘right’—it was about feeling safe, connected, and present in the moment.
Why Mindfulness Works for Dementia
The brain with dementia works differently, and that means we need to meet people where they are. Mindfulness isn’t about remembering; it’s about experiencing. The warmth of the room, the sound of a voice, the feeling of breath—these small moments bring comfort and ease.
For people living with dementia, mindfulness can:
✔ Reduce feelings of anxiety and restlessness
✔ Help the brain feel safe and settled
✔ Encourage connection without pressure
✔ Turn confusion into calm
By the end of the session, the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. One person put it simply.
“I feel lighter… more at peace.”
And that’s why we do this. Not to fix, but to support. Not to correct, but to connect.
We believe everyone deserves a space where they feel calm, safe, and supported, and that’s why we’re fundraising to grow our Bridgend Dementia Hub.
With your help, we can:
💙 Offer more sessions like today’s mindfulness group
💙 Provide specialist support for carers
💙 Create a space designed for comfort, connection, and wellbeing
🫶 Can you support our Dementia Hub?
Every donation, no matter how small, helps us bring more moments of peace and connection to those who need them most.
Because when we understand dementia, we can change the experience. Every moment matters.
