Dementia Awareness Week 19th May to the 25th of May 2025 is a vital opportunity to challenge misconceptions, share knowledge, and shine a spotlight on the realities of dementia. This annual campaign encourages open conversations about dementia, reduces stigma, and ensures that individuals affected by dementia receive the understanding, care, and support they deserve. At Mental Health Matters Wales (MHM Wales), we are proud to be part of this movement, using this week to highlight the importance of awareness, support, and advocacy.

Dementia Awareness and Welsh Government Policies
Our work aligns closely with key Welsh Government policies and strategies designed to support people living with dementia and their carers, including:
The Welsh Government's Dementia Action Plan for Wales (2018–2022) and ongoing developments: Committed to improving the lives of people affected by dementia, promoting timely diagnosis, enhancing support, and ensuring that people with dementia can live well in their communities.
A Healthier Wales: Our Plan for Health and Social Care (2018): Focusing on integrated, person-centred care, with an emphasis on well-being, prevention, and community support.
The Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015: Prioritising long-term health and well-being, social inclusion, and support for vulnerable individuals, including those with dementia.
Social Services and Well-being (Wales) Act 2014: Promoting person-centred care, safeguarding individuals, and empowering people to have control over their support and care decisions.
These policies provide a clear framework for our work at MHM Wales, ensuring that our dementia support services are not only compassionate but also aligned with national and regional standards.
What is Dementia?
Dementia is an umbrella term for a range of cognitive disorders that affect memory, thinking, problem-solving, language, and behaviour. It is not a single disease but rather a collection of symptoms caused by various conditions, including:
Alzheimer’s Disease: The most common form, characterised by memory loss, confusion, and changes in behaviour.
Vascular Dementia: Caused by reduced blood flow to the brain, often following a stroke.
Frontotemporal Dementia: Affects the front and side regions of the brain, impacting behaviour, personality, and language.
Lewy Body Dementia: Characterised by abnormal protein deposits in the brain, leading to fluctuating cognitive abilities, visual hallucinations, and movement issues.
Dispelling Common Myths About Dementia
Myth 1: Dementia is a normal part of ageing.
Fact: Dementia is not a natural part of ageing. While age is a risk factor, dementia results from specific brain diseases, not simply getting older.
Myth 2: Only older adults can develop dementia.
Fact: Dementia can affect younger people too. Young-onset dementia can occur in individuals under 65, impacting their careers, relationships, and daily lives.
Myth 3: People with dementia cannot communicate.
Fact: Many individuals with dementia can communicate effectively with the right support and understanding. Communication may change, but it is still possible.
Myth 4: Dementia is solely about memory loss.
Fact: While memory loss is a common symptom, dementia can also affect thinking, problem-solving, perception, and behaviour.
