Every November, we shine a light on men’s mental health, an issue that has been overlooked for far too long. Despite progress, men continue to face unique challenges in discussing and addressing their mental well-being. This month serves as a call to action to challenge stereotypes, break down barriers, and promote open conversations about mental health.
The Reality of Men's Mental Health
The statistics are sobering. In 2022, 74.1% of suicides in England and Wales were among men, amounting to 5,642 registered deaths by suicide (Office for National Statistics, 2023)
Men are also disproportionately affected by other mental health-related issues. They are nearly three times more likely than women to develop alcohol dependency and frequently report higher levels of drug use (Men’s Health Forum, 2023)
Furthermore, men are more likely to face compulsory detention under the Mental Health Act, reflecting the severe consequences of untreated mental health conditions (NHS Digital, 2023)
Why Men Struggle to Seek Help
Despite these concerning figures, men are less likely to access psychological therapies, accounting for just 36% of NHS referrals (NHS Talking Therapies, 2023).
This disparity is largely driven by societal expectations. Traditional notions of masculinity, such as the pressure to “man up” or suppress emotions, create a stigma around seeking help. Many men fear that admitting to mental health struggles might be perceived as weakness, preventing them from seeking the support they need.
How Awareness Helps
Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month is an opportunity to challenge harmful stereotypes and foster an environment of understanding and openness. By normalising conversations about mental health, we can empower men to speak up, seek help, and take control of their mental well-being.

"Stand Tall"* – A Call to Action
We’re proud to support "Stand Tall", a song written by Sam in collaboration with MHM Wales and other charities. This powerful anthem serves as a beacon of resilience, community, and hope for men navigating mental health challenges.
"Stand Tall" is more than just a song; it’s a movement. It encourages men to embrace their strength, seek support, and connect with others who understand their journey. By purchasing the song or sharing its message, you can help raise awareness and funds for vital services. Every penny raised will go toward supporting MHM Wales’ mental health initiatives
