Eating Disorders Awareness Week 2025: The Time is Now

Breaking the Silence on Eating Disorders

From February 24th to March 2nd, 2025, we mark Eating Disorders Awareness Week, a time to amplify voices, challenge misconceptions, and provide support to those affected. This year’s theme, "The Time is Now," urges action in raising awareness, promoting early intervention, and ensuring no one feels alone in their journey to recovery.

At Mental Health Matters Wales (MHM Wales), we are committed to supporting individuals struggling with eating disorders. One of the key ways we do this is through SORTED (Share Our Recovery Through Eating Disorders)—a peer support group providing a safe space for those affected to connect, share, and heal.

What is SORTED?

SORTED stands for Share Our Recovery Through Eating Disorders. It is a peer-led support group designed for anyone aged 17 and over who is living with or recovering from an eating disorder. No formal diagnosis is needed—our group is open to anyone who feels they need support.

  • When? Every Wednesday from 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM

  • Where? Both in-person and online sessions are available

  • How to join? Email us at sorted@mhmwales.org

Eating disorders thrive in isolation, which is why peer support can be life-changing. Being part of a community that understands can make all the difference in building confidence, self-compassion, and recovery strategies.

Key Statistics on Eating Disorders in Wales

The impact of eating disorders in Wales has become more pronounced in recent years, with a sharp increase in demand for support services:

  1. Increase in Support Requests:

    • The number of young adults (18–22) seeking support for eating disorders in Wales has more than tripled over five years, with helpline contacts rising from 178 (2019/20) to 724 (2023/24), a 307% increase [1].

    • Between April 2023 and March 2024, helpline sessions increased

eightfold compared to pre-pandemic levels, reaching 1,457 contacts [1].

  2. Prevalence Estimates (2014):

    • Estimated adults aged 15–34 with anorexia nervosa: 1,270 (120 males, 1,150 females) [3].

    • Estimated adults aged 15–34 with bulimia nervosa: 4,225 (400 males, 3,825 females) [3].

  3. Incidence Trends

    • Diagnosed eating disorders ranged from 8 per 100,000 people in 1990/91 to a peak of 24 per 100,000 in 2003/04. GP referrals to specialists have risen steadily since 2000 [2].

  4. Economic Impact:

    • Between 1990 and 2017, over 15,500 individuals were diagnosed with eating disorders in Wales [7].

These figures highlight the growing demand for eating disorder services and the ongoing challenges in addressing this issue effectively.

Why Awareness Matters

Eating disorders are serious mental health conditions that can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, or background. Yet, stigma and misinformation still prevent many from seeking help.

  • 1 in 50 people in the UK are estimated to have an eating disorder.

  • Less than 25% of those affected receive treatment.

  • Early intervention can significantly improve recovery rates.

By talking openly about eating disorders, challenging harmful stereotypes, and ensuring accessible support, we can help people feel seen, heard, and supported.
