Successful Mental Health Event: Power of Attorney Talk

On the 3rd of September 2024, MHM Wales hosted a highly informative and impactful event focused on mental health awareness and legal protection, with a particular emphasis on Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA). The session, held in partnership with Rhys Barraj Legal and Gareth from Swansea Legal Solutions Ltd, brought together professionals, volunteers, and members of the public to shed light on the importance of having a lasting power of attorney in place, especially for those dealing with mental health challenges.

The highlight of the event was an engaging talk on Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA), a legal document that allows individuals to appoint one or more trusted persons to act on their behalf in case they are no longer able to make decisions for themselves. This is especially crucial for those with mental health issues, as it ensures that someone you trust will make decisions regarding your financial affairs, health, and welfare, should the need arise.

Rhys Barraj Legal and Gareth from Swansea Legal Solutions Ltd provided an indepth overview of how LPA works, the different types of LPA (Property & Financial Affairs and Health & Welfare), and why it is essential to have it set up sooner rather than later. They explained how you can appoint one or more people to act on your behalf, particularly if you have several trusted individuals, such as children or close friends, who can share responsibility.

Attendees had the opportunity to ask questions and explore how this legal tool can help safeguard the interests of individuals and their families, especially in situations where mental health conditions might impair decisionmaking ability.

The event wasn't only about the technicalities of LPA but also about raising broader mental health awareness. MHM Wales believes that legal protection and mental health advocacy go hand in hand, and that ensuring your future decisions are in safe hands is an integral part of mental wellbeing.

The event attracted a diverse group of people, including legal professionals, advocates, and members of the public who were eager to learn more about how they can protect themselves and their loved ones by planning for the future. Many left feeling empowered with knowledge and keen to take proactive steps toward safeguarding their mental and legal wellbeing.

We are immensely grateful to Rhys Barraj Legal and Gareth from Swansea Legal Solutions Ltd for leading this informative session. Their expertise helped clarify a complex topic, making it accessible to all in attendance. The success of this event speaks to the importance of collaboration between mental health organisations like MHM Wales and legal professionals, all working towards ensuring better care and protection for those facing mental health challenges.

Stay tuned for more such insightful events as MHM Wales continues its mission to raise awareness and provide support for mental health issues across Wales. Our next event will be announced soon, and we look forward to welcoming you again!
