The Garden Grows at St David's Hospital. A Follow-up on Our Therapeutic Gardening Sessions

mhmadmin

The gardening sessions at St David’s Hospital continue to thrive, bringing patients together and brightening both the space and their spirits. Led by the talented Occupational Therapists (OTs) and supported by our dedicated Wellbeing Team, the sessions have become an essential part of the weekly routine.

As plants continue to sprout, excitement is growing! Patients are actively engaged in decorating pots and adding personal touches to their garden spaces. Each pot tells a story, each plant represents growth, and each activity contributes to the mental and emotional well-being of the participants.

These sessions have shown that gardening is not just about tending to plants—it’s about creating connections, engaging the mind, and building a sense of purpose. The enthusiasm among the participants is evident as they watch their hard work come to life in vibrant blooms and flourishing greenery.

Brightening the Space and the Spirit

The garden has become a hub of activity where patients can express themselves, nurture their creativity, and engage in meaningful interactions with others. The decorating of pots has allowed patients to connect with their memories and bring a personal touch to their garden space. It’s also a wonderful way to enhance social connections, as patients share ideas, stories, and laughter while working side by side.

Our collaborative efforts, with the support of Cardiff and the Vale University Health Board's Occupational Therapists, have made these sessions a highlight of the week. The success of this green initiative is a testament to the power of community, nature, and person-centred care in improving the well-being of patients.

Continued Growth and Positive Impact

The benefits of gardening are undeniable—patients’ cognitive abilities, mood, and social engagement are all significantly enhanced. With each plant that sprouts, there is a symbol of hope and progress, demonstrating the positive impact these sessions have on both individual well-being and the overall hospital community.

The continued growth of the garden not only adds beauty to the hospital environment but also provides a consistent and meaningful activity for patients. It’s inspiring to witness how the space has evolved into a source of pride for both patients and staff alike.

Looking Ahead

We are excited to continue supporting this initiative alongside the Occupational Therapy team and Cardiff and the Vale University Health Board. As the garden continues to bloom, so will the connections, experiences, and positive outcomes for the patients.
