SHARE

For many people who experience self-harm, finding a safe and understanding space to talk can be incredibly difficult. Self-harm is often a way to cope with overwhelming emotions, distress, or a sense of numbness when other strategies feel out of reach.

It can take many forms, including non-suicidal self-injury and overdose behaviours. Despite common misconceptions, self-harm isn’t always linked to suicidal intent, but it thrives in isolation.

Support makes a difference. Relationships can be complicated, and professional help isn’t always immediate, but having a space to talk, connect, and explore healthier ways of coping can improve mental health and overall well-being. That’s where SHARE comes in.

What is SHARE?

SHARE is a peer support group run by MHM Wales for people struggling with self-harm, offering a safe space to talk, connect, and work towards well-being. The name SHARE was chosen by the peers who access the group, reflecting its core purpose—providing a space for people to share their experiences and support one another.

Many who join feel unheard, overwhelmed, or stuck in cycles of self-harm.

The group helps people express their emotions, build confidence, and develop a sense of connection, key elements in improving mental health.

SHARE is a peer support group for people struggling with self-harm, offering a safe space to talk, connect, and work towards well-being.

SHARE runs both online and in person, with weekly sessions where you can participate as much or as little as you like.

Whether you choose to speak or simply listen, it's a space where you’ll meet others who truly understand, offering support without judgment.

What Happens in a SHARE Session?

Each session is guided by a facilitator who ensures discussions remain respectful, balanced, and supportive. Sessions begin with a check-in, where members reflect on their week.

Conversations flow naturally, often covering:

Coping strategies

Exploring what helps in difficult moments.

Family and relationships

Navigating challenges with loved ones.

Struggles and wins

Sharing difficulties but also celebrating progress.

New tools to try

Finding ways to maintain stability and well-being.

New members are introduced gradually, and clear guidelines are in place to protect everyone’s well-being. No one is expected to share more than they’re comfortable with, and listening without judgment is always encouraged.

There’s no fixed agenda, what matters is that everyone leaves with something helpful. Whether it’s a new perspective, a useful resource, or simply the feeling of being heard, SHARE is about taking small, meaningful steps forward.

The Impact of SHARE

Many people arrive at SHARE feeling lost, hopeless, or unsure if they belong. But over time, things change.

People gain confidence. They discover what works for them, find the right support, and begin taking control of their well-being. For some, SHARE provides a foundation. They attend for a while, gain strength, and move forward. For others, it becomes a second family, a space they return to, even when doing better, to support others.

Here’s what some members have shared:

“I went months without cutting myself.”

“This group saved my life.”

“I have better relationships with my SHARE family than with my own family.”

“The Zoom meetings saved me from myself.”

“I feel safe here. No masks, no pretending.”

Reaching More People

We want to make sure more people know that SHARE exists. Right now, we mostly reach those already connected with MHM Wales, but many others could benefit from this group.

If you know someone who might need SHARE, please help spread the word.

If you’re struggling with self-harm and need a safe place to talk, we’re here.

You’re Not Alone

Self-harm can feel isolating, but you don’t have to go through it alone. At SHARE, you’ll find a community that listens, understands, and supports you without judgment or pressure. Whether you’re just starting your journey or further along, you deserve a space where you feel safe and valued.

Take that first step. We’re here when you’re ready.
